We pick up from Khao San and central tourist hotels and depart to Ayutthaya or the Ancient City as it is also known. This once glorious capital city, situated 80 km from Bangkok was destroyed by the Burmese army in 1767 and is now a UNESCO world heritage site. A large number of palaces, temples and chedis are still standing. In 1782 Bangkok became the capital of Thailand. The principal sights include the gigantic bronze statues of Wat Mongkol Borpith, also Wat Phra Srisanpetch and Wat Yai Chai Mongkol.

We visit the scenic Wat Yai Chi Mongkhon and Wat Lokayasutha. Wat Phra Si Samphet is the main temple complex left over from Ayuthaya’s golden age. We visit the ancient palace and Vihan Mongkol Bopit one of the largest bronze buddhas in Thailand.

At 12.30 we have a tasty Thai lunch (included). Afterwards we visit the resplendant Wat Phra Mahathat, one of the most imposing ancient Buddhist monasteries. This temple is located on the bank of the Chao Phraya River. King Prasatthong authorized the building with the architecture influenced by the Khmer style. It is one of Ayutthaya's most beautiful temples and a major tourist attraction.

Returning from Ayutthaya at approx 1430, we go to Bang Pa-In, the former royal summer retreat of the 17th century kings of Ayutthaya. We alight to walk the magnificent grounds of Bang Pa-In Summer Palace. Overlooking the waterways the many buildings are a curious mixture of early 20th century European styles that contrast with the Chinese and Thai pavilion. Not to be missed, very scenic, this present-day royal palace dates from the reign of King Chulalongkorn (1868-1910). Most of the buildings standing today were constructed between1872-1889.
